BUT there are some fashion rules that go along with that. When choosing between a hat and a fascinator, consider the occasion, your outfit, and your personal style. A hat, especially a wide-brimmed one, can be a bold statement, while a fascinator offers a more subtle, elegant touch, and both are typically worn on the right side of the head. A fascinator is just a hat on a headband, and smaller in size, so easier to wear if it’s windy. Typically, you wear a hat or fascinator with a short dress, not a floor length dress.

A Brief History of Kilts & Tartans

Thinking about wearing a kilt for the big day? You’re in good company! The kilt is one of Scotland’s most iconic garments, full of history and pride. It originated in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century as a full-length piece of wool called the feileadh mòr, which was later shortened into the knee-length version we know today.

Each kilt is made from tartan; the distinctive checkered pattern woven into the fabric. Today, tartans often represent Scottish clans (families), but they can also symbolize regions, organizations, or simply be chosen for their colors and style. There’s no need to belong to a specific clan to wear a tartan, many are considered universal, so you’re free to pick one that suits you. The full outfit typically includes the kilt, jacket, sporran (a pouch worn at the front), kilt hose (socks), flashes, ghillie brogues (traditional shoes), and sometimes even a sgian-dubh (a small knife tucked into the sock).

Whether you’re honoring your heritage or just want to get into the spirit of the celebration, wearing a kilt is a fun and meaningful way to mark the occasion!

Kilt rental

If you’d like to join in the Highland tradition, kilt rentals are available through these three places that we have found within 30 minutes of the venue:

https://deesidekilts.co.uk

https://www.facebook.com/RDoigSons/?locale2=en_GB&_rdr

https://www.highlandscene.co.uk

But please feel free to do your own research and go with whatever company you would like!

Dress Code The dress code for our wedding is festive formal.
